Academic Teaching Excellence (ATE)

WHAT IS ACADEMIC TEACHING EXCELLENCE?

Academic Teaching Excellence (ATE) is a training course that has been developed to help academic staff who teach their subjects through the medium of English.

Designed in close co-operation with the University of Oxford, the course draws on the latest research in the field of English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) and is delivered by very experienced trainers, who have received special training for teaching ATE.

BACKGROUND

Degree courses in Europe are increasingly being taught in English, often where neither teacher nor students are native speakers. ATE has been specifically designed to improve the overall quality of academic teaching, by offering useful techniques for day-to-day teaching in lectures and seminars, and updating the language skills of lecturers.

HOW DOES ATE HELP?

  • develops a good understanding of the communication principles that underlie academic teaching with English as the medium of instruction
  • improves the quality of teachers’ communication with their students, through more confident and effective teaching in English
  • teachers benefit from the latest research into English as a medium of instruction
  • through intensive micro-teaching sessions, teachers are able to get feedback,  analyse and review their current teaching practice
  • increases a higher education institution’s chance of attracting the most talented students and staff.
